Depends on healing and plan

The right answer depends on the gap

A missing tooth does not affect everyone in the same way. Its position, the opposing teeth and the health of the remaining mouth influence chewing and appearance. We assess the gap and discuss replacement or monitoring, considering your preferences, available time and the care each option will need.

Reasons to discuss a missing tooth

  • Difficulty chewing certain foods
  • A visible gap that concerns you
  • Changes in speech or bite
  • Food trapping around a gap

Understanding tooth loss

  • Possible causes

Teeth may be lost through decay, injury or gum disease.

  • Assessing oral health

Understanding the cause helps us assess the remaining teeth and gums.

  • Planning a replacement

Addressing active problems helps us plan a suitable replacement.

Possible treatment options

Options for replacing missing teeth

Dental Implants

Where suitable, implants can support replacement teeth after assessment of your oral health, available bone and treatment requirements.

Dental Bridges

A fixed replacement may fill a gap when suitable neighbouring teeth or implants can provide support.

Partial & Full Dentures

Removable partial or full dentures can replace missing teeth, with the design chosen for your mouth and preferences.

ConsiderationDental implantsDental bridgesPartial & full dentures
Fixed or removable
Can support a fixed crown or bridge, or help retain a removable denture.Fixed in place; you do not remove it for cleaning.Removable; partial dentures replace some teeth, and full dentures replace all teeth in one arch.
What needs assessing
Avoids reshaping neighbouring teeth for support. Requires surgery and assessment of bone, gum health and general health.Needs suitable supporting teeth. A conventional bridge reshapes them; an adhesive bridge can require little or no preparation. An option for one or more missing teeth. Getting used to the fit, eating and speaking can take time.
Everyday care
Clean around the implant and replacement every day, and attend recommended reviews.Brush the supporting teeth and clean beneath the replacement tooth as shown by your dental team.Remove and clean daily; normally take out at night unless advised otherwise. Review any soreness or looseness.
Visits and healing
Usually involves several months of healing and staged visits. Bone grafting may extend the plan.Requires planning, impressions or scans, and fitting visits. Other dental treatment may be needed first.Made and fitted over several visits, with adjustments as needed. Dentures fitted after extraction may later need relining or replacement.

Monitoring a gap may also be appropriate after assessment. No option is maintenance-free, and repairs or replacement may be needed over time.

Your questions, answered

Does every missing tooth need replacing?

Not always. A gap may be monitored if it does not cause a meaningful problem with appearance or function. Your dentist will assess your bite, nearby teeth and oral health, and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of replacement before you decide.

Is an implant always better than a bridge?

No single option suits every mouth. An implant avoids using neighbouring teeth for support, but needs surgery, suitable bone and time to heal. A bridge may be appropriate when supporting teeth are suitable. Your health, the condition of nearby teeth, preferences and treatment plan guide the choice.

How long does replacing a tooth take?

It depends on the option and whether other care is needed first. Bridges and dentures require planning and fitting visits. Implant treatment commonly takes several months because the implant needs to bond with the bone; grafting may add time. Your dentist can discuss temporary teeth and an individual schedule.

Will the surrounding teeth move into the gap?

Nearby teeth can drift or tilt towards a gap, but this does not happen to everyone. Your dentist can check for changes in tooth position and bite. If you choose to monitor a gap, keep attending the reviews recommended for your mouth.

What determines the cost of replacing missing teeth?

The quote depends on how many teeth need replacing, the type and material of the replacement, and any additional treatment required. Ask what is included, such as the implant and final crown, laboratory work and reviews. SmileOn's consultation is PKR 2,000; replacement treatment is quoted separately after assessment.
