What is a dental abscess?

An abscess is a collection of pus caused by infection in or around a tooth or gum. Infection may develop around a tooth root or within the supporting tissues. Some abscesses cause severe pain; others are less painful. They need professional treatment even if pain eases or fluid drains into the mouth.

Signs that need assessment

  • Throbbing tooth or gum pain
  • A gum lump or facial swelling
  • A bad taste or discharge
  • Fever or feeling unwell

Where an infection may begin

  • Deep tooth decay

Bacteria can reach the pulp and spread through the root into surrounding tissues.

  • A damaged tooth

Cracks or previous injury may damage the pulp, creating a route for infection.

  • Gum or eruption problems

Gum disease or a partly erupted tooth can allow infection around the tooth.

Care based on your assessment

Treating the source of infection

Your symptoms, oral health and preferences guide the care we discuss. Some approaches may be combined.

Drainage and local treatment

The dentist may drain pus and treat the affected area, with further care directed at the cause of the infection.

Root canal treatment

For a suitable tooth, root canal treatment removes infected tissue from inside the tooth before sealing and restoring it appropriately.

Extraction when necessary

If a tooth cannot be saved, removal may address the infection source; your dentist explains the alternatives and suitable aftercare.

How these approaches differ

ApproachWhen it may fitWhat to expect
Drainage and local treatment
Pus or an infection in the tooth or surrounding gum needs local care.Relieves the collection; the underlying cause still needs treatment.
Root canal treatment
The infection comes from a tooth that is suitable to retain.Clean and seal the canals, then restore the tooth and attend reviews.
Extraction when necessary
The affected tooth cannot be predictably restored or retained.Remove the source, follow wound-care advice and discuss replacement separately.

These are not three interchangeable choices. Drainage may accompany root canal treatment or extraction. Antibiotics are prescribed when indicated and do not replace treatment of the source.

Your questions, answered

Can an abscess go away on its own?

No. An abscess needs dental treatment. Pain may ease if pus drains, but the source can remain and infection can spread. Keep an urgent appointment even if the tooth starts to feel better.

Do I always need antibiotics?

No. For many localised infections, dental treatment is the priority. Antibiotics may be needed when infection spreads, you have fever or feel unwell, or your health changes the risk. Your dentist decides after assessment.

Can the tooth be saved?

Sometimes. Root canal treatment may allow a restorable tooth to be retained. The decision depends on the remaining tooth structure and infection source; some teeth need extraction. We explain the findings before recommending a plan.

Why does my gum have a lump without much pain?

An infected tooth can sometimes cause limited pain or drainage through the gum. A quiet period does not confirm recovery. A dentist needs to examine the lump and identify its cause before deciding on treatment.

What happens after the urgent treatment?

Further visits may be needed to complete root canal treatment and place a suitable filling or crown. Keep the follow-up plan: initial drainage or symptom relief may be only the first stage of care.
