Understanding your care

Composite bonding adds and shapes resin on selected tooth surfaces. It may preserve more tooth tissue than a ceramic restoration, but suitability depends on the damage, bite and goals.

Your consultation

Discuss your treatment plan

Your dentist will talk you through the proposed composite bonding: whether it suits your teeth and bite, the result you can expect and any preparation needed.

Suitability

We examine your teeth, gums and bite to confirm that bonding can address the chip, gap or uneven edge you want to change.

Expected results

Discuss the proposed shape and how the resin shade will blend with your natural teeth, including any whitening beforehand.

Preparation

Bonding often needs little or no drilling; your dentist explains any smoothing or preparation before the resin is applied.

Discuss the size of the chip or gap and the proposed tooth shape.

  • Shade matching

Your bite helps determine which changes are practical and suitable.

After your treatment

Composite bonding aftercare

Composite bonding can often be completed in one visit, although more extensive treatment may require additional appointments.

  • Check your bite

Let us know if the bonded tooth feels high, uneven or uncomfortable.

  • Avoid hard biting

Don’t bite nails, pens, ice or other hard objects with bonded teeth.

  • Brush & floss daily

Keep the teeth and bonding margins clean with regular oral hygiene.

  • Limit staining foods & drinks

Coffee, tea and strongly coloured foods may stain composite over time.

  • Polishing may be needed

Bonded teeth may need occasional polishing to maintain their appearance.

  • Watch for chips or rough edges

Contact us if the bonding chips, feels rough or becomes loose.

  • Attend regular reviews

Routine dental visits help us monitor the bonding and surrounding teeth.

Your questions, answered

Is bonding the same as a filling?

Both can use composite resin. Fillings repair decay or damage; cosmetic bonding changes selected tooth shapes or edges.

Can bonding close any gap?

No. Gap size, tooth proportions, gum health and the bite matter. Orthodontics or another option may suit some gaps better.

How long does bonding last?

There is no fixed lifespan. Bite forces, habits and cleaning affect wear, staining and chipping; maintenance or repair may be needed.

Should I whiten first?

If whitening is part of the plan, it is usually considered before choosing the resin shade. Bonding does not lighten with whitening.
